TCP/IP: Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol

TCP/IP has 4 layers, the application is the layer for SMTP (e-mail), FTP (file transfer) and HTTP (web browsing).  The transport layer is meant for transferring data (TCP) from the application layer and dividing them into packets and transferring it to the next layer which is Internet.  Internet is what receives the packets that we can send out and it will then be sent to the next computer, the internet knows what your ip address is and knows the ip address of the surrounding computers.   The last layer is Network Interface, this layer is in charge of accepting the packets that were sent from the Internet, and sends it to the receiving computer.

An ip address is the address given to each computer or device that connects to the internet, it is a way of knowing where these computers are located, much like a mail box it is there to send and recieve information, also known as packets.

An ip address is designed to have 4 sections that are divided by dots (.) this makes it easier for our brains to remember.  The ip address is actually much like this (11011000.00011011.00111101.10001001)

A router is a device that connects you pc to all the other pc’s in your house, it sends internet and data to the pc’s that are in its range.  A router can also add security to your internet surfing, it can block connections that are not wanted.

A switch is a device much like the router but instead of connecting everybody to the internet wirelessly it connects people to a LAN.  It is a large device that has many inputs that are used to connect many computers so they can communicate without any security breaches.

A hub is very much like the switch except there is very little security, it basically takes in information and repeats it to all the other connections that are wired in.  They are a lot less common because of the low price and the sophistic nature of the network switch.

The MAC Address also known as the Media Access Control Address is assigned to all network adapters, it is assigned to give the person an address like a home so they can be transferred data without any confusion.  An example of a MAC address is (00-B0-D0-86-BB-F7)

Past and Future Technology

January 5, 2010

Minimum specs to run windows 2000 would have been, Processor – 133 MHz or higher Pentium.  The memory or RAM was 64 megabytes (MB).  The minimum hard drive space was, 2GB hard disk with a minimum of 650MB.  One of the common processors were, Pentium III Xeon, and 133 MHz Processor.  At that time we were using,  Internet Explorer 5.5, Windows Media Player 7, and the Windows Movie Maker was brand new. Now we have quad core processors and our ram is very commonly 4 gb and sometimes 8 gb.  Our GPU’s are nvidia 8800-9800 gt and gts, and the gtx 260 and 280.

Some common Cell Phones 10 years ago were, Motorola Talkabout T8160, Nokia 8210, Motorola V60.  These phones were very basic and had very low resolution screens very different from the phones we have now like the iPhone.  They were commonly flip phones with a standard keyboard.  Our phones now are iPhones and other touch screen and full keyboard phones, we are very used to texting and do not call people very often because we text very frequently.  Our screens are very high resolution but some day we will think back and say how poor the screens were on our phones.

10 years ago we were playing on our ps1 and our ps2′s, we very commonly used the Nintendo N64, these game comsoles were in our view now poor but back then it was break through technology, we would play them like we do on our xbox 360′s and our ps3′s.  Back then we did not have a live feature and we could not play wirelessly against our friends, now some people depend on their live to play with friends.  It is an easy way to keep in contact with friends with out having to get off your couch.

Cameras back 10 years were not very good quality, they were nothing like the cameras that we have these days.  These cameras were around 2.0 megapixels, they were very poor quality and the cameras had a very small preview screen.  The optical zoom was around 3x optical.  The image sizes were, 1632 x 1224, 1024 x 768, 640 x 480.  Now our cameras are around 10 to 15 megapixels, they are very good resolution and take excellent pictures.  The zoom is determined by the lens that you have on your camera, these cameras are known as slr’s.

In a recent study in the UK, they came to the conclusion that 60% of xbox 360 get red ring of death. They also studied ps3′s and nintendo wii’s. The ps3 has a 16% death rate and the nintendo wii has a 6% death rate. Some 1,128 UK-based console owners responded, of whom 562 owned Xbox 360s, 473 owned PS3s and 591 had Wiis (some owned more than one). Only 25 per cent of disappointed 360 owners had owned the console for more than 18 months before it broke, with 47 per cent reporting a failure inside a year. Seventy two per cent returned their Xbox to Microsoft, who extended the 360′s warranty to three years after the console’s problems became widely known. Fifteen per cent sought their own solution, such as repairing it themselves or giving up and throwing it under a bed. One miserable gamer reported, “I can’t afford to get (the Xbox 360) fixed as it is out of warranty, so it sits in the spare room all lonely.”

Many 360 owners report the console breaking more than once. Of those whose console has broken at least once, 32 per cent say it has broken twice, and 19 per cent say it has broken three times or more. One person said their 360 “was repaired six times before (being) refunded by Microsoft”. Of those who have bought a 360 in the last two years, only for it to break, 29 per cent say it has broken more than once.
The ps3 has a much higher reliability than the xbox 360. This is known all over the world because every time when someone goes to buy a console they may want and xbox 360 but they think about the reliability of it and double think about getting this console.

Many people think about the problems that the xbox 360 has which is a 60% red ring of death percentage, if you are like me or most other people you have your sights on an xbox 360 console but when you think about purchasing it you will think about the red ring of death problem that occurs very often in xbox consoles. This is a huge factor when you are ready to purchase you next console but you may decide to buy the xbox 360 anyways, it has the best games “my opinion” and it has a great dashboard and way to talk with your friends online. It is a great console decision but you have to think about the red ring. You may be lucky with your choice but you may also be unlucky, in some cases people have their console’s break more than once and some other people may not ever have it break on them. Microsoft is trying to have the most reliable console out there and it starts with a mistake you only go up from there.

Laptop reliability:

New data from SquareTrade (one of the bigger warranty providers) says Asus and Toshiba have the least hardware malfunctions over 3 years, while one-in-four HP laptops are projected to experience problems. Oh, and crappy netbooks are worst of all. They say that sub-$400 netbooks are 20 percent more likely to fail in the first year. But no real surprises there. SquareTrade says it randomly selected over 30,000 laptops and netbooks covered by its warranty plans for the study. Brands with a minimum of 1000 laptops included Acer, Apple, Asus, Dell, Gateway, HP, Lenovo, Sony, and Toshiba. Accidental damage and software issues handled by the retailer were not included in the numbers.

My laptop is an HP, I am very satisfied with it. I have never had any problems with it even with windows 7 built on it. This study was very accurate because Asus is knows for good computers, and Toshiba I do not have any experience of. I have an Asus motherboard and I have also been very satisfied with it. They are very powerful and extremely reliable. They are very good and reliable.

Windows 7 / Google OS

October 22, 2009

Windows 7 has many new features that windows vista did not contain.   It has a new style with a thicker bar and with many themes pre-installed.  You can choose to have a background that changes every minute or so.  You can customize the colour of the bar and the window edges.  It is a light weight version of windows, it is a huge improvement from vista.  The speed of the boot-up and the speed of programs is greatly improved.  Your favorite programs like adobe Photoshop and your web browsers boot-up faster.  The security is much improved and is updated frequently.  There is no need to get a program like avast or McAfee when you have the security that windows offers.  It just saves some room for spare ram and processing.  One of the first thing you may find about windows 7 is that soon after you walk away from your computer it will automatically go into Hibernate.  Its fast, its trustworthy, its Windws 7.®

Google Chrome is an open-sourced operating system.  This means that you will be able to see the source that runs the program.  You can access it and change it to fit your needs. If you understand the source code then you can change it and reboot the computer, this will allow you to fix any problems with the os.  It is designed ofter the web browser called google chrome.  This google chrome is being used by over 30 million people world wide.  This operating system will be extremely lightweight, you will not be able to add 3rd party programs like adobe products.  It will be a very contained.  The operating system will be targeting notebook pc’s.

Google Sketch-up

April 28, 2009

Google sketch-up is a program that google made that allows you to create 3d models that you can design and look at from all angles, many people use it for making house plans or just for fun.  It can be used for creating a house and putting it into google earth so you have a 3d model where ever you want.  Companies like whirl pool have made models of their own product, you can use this so you can put it into your house.  This program could be great for designing your home for when you are ready to build your own house.  I use it for fun and for my ict class.
